What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are titanium posts that fuse with the jawbone to replace missing tooth roots, but they are also the foundational support that produces life-changing results. As the only root-to-crown restoration, implants help improve bone and facial stability with continuous stimulation. They also work in conjunction with lifelike restorations to rebuild teeth and effectively fill in the gaps in your smile.

The 4 Step Dental Implant Process

Dental implants can be attached in four simple steps

Unlike more temporary tooth loss solutions such as dental bridges and dentures, getting dental implants requires a unique, multi-step process that spans several months. However, although this may seem like a long time, it is important to consider the long-term benefits of this treatment. At Bradford Dental Care, we’re pleased to provide the entire dental implant treatment right here in our office, instead of referring you to an outside specialist. While each treatment will look slightly different from patient to patient, there are four main steps you can expect to take along the way: the initial consultation, surgery, osseointegration, and the delivery of your final restoration.

Initial Dental Implant Consultation

The first step in your dental implant journey is the consultation

At your initial consultation, your dentist will review your oral health and medical history to determine if you’re a good candidate for surgery. If necessary, we’ll work with you to complete any preliminary procedures like gum disease therapy, tooth extractions, or bone grafting. Then, once those are completed, we can move on to planning the rest of your dental implant treatment, including the timeline and cost.

Dental Implant Surgery

Dental implant surgery is the second step in the dental implant treatment process

At Bradford Dental Care, we’re proud to complete the entire dental implant process in-house. This benefits the patient because you won’t need to drive from practice to practice or pay multiple parties for your care.

On the day of your dental implant surgery, your dentist will first numb your mouth and ensure that you are comfortable. Then, we will make a small incision in your gums, insert the dental implant, close the gums, and place protective caps on the posts.

Dental Implant Osseointegration & Abutment Placement

Osseointegration is where your dental implant permanently fuses with the jawbone

Over the next few months, your dental implant must permanently fuse with your jawbone via a process called osseointegration. This can take anywhere from three to six months but is extremely important in ensuring the success of your dental implants. Once completed, you will return to Bradford Dental Care to have your implant abutments placed. This requires another minor surgical procedure that should only take a few weeks to heal from. While you recover, your final restoration(s) will be crafted at the dental lab from impressions taken of your mouth during your consultation.

Delivery of Dental Implant Restorations

The placement of your dental implants is the final step in the four step dental implant process

Finally, you’ll return to our office to have your restoration(s) placed. These may be in the form of a crown, denture, or dental bridge, depending on how many teeth you’re replacing. Before you leave, we’ll check to make sure your bite is comfortable, and if all looks and feels satisfactory, you’ll be ready to go enjoy your beautiful new smile!

Benefits of Dental Implants

With dental implants, the benefits are truly endless. That’s why they are widely loved by patients and dentists alike! If you are interested in learning more about the perks that come with this reliable, versatile, and lifelike tooth-replacement solution, then keep reading – this next section is for you!

Day-to-Day Benefits

One of the driving factors that leads patients to choose dental implants over others is the day-to-day benefits that they come with, including:

  • Restored Bite Strength – Not only do dental implants get strength and stability from your jaw, but the restoration secured on top is crafted from only the best materials. As a result, you’ll no longer be limited to eating plain yogurt, applesauce, and other extremely soft foods. Instead, you’ll be able to enjoy a varied, well-balanced, and satisfying diet!
  • Improved Speaking Patterns – Following tooth loss, it can be difficult to enunciate clearly. This causes many patients to become a shell of who they once were. If that sounds all too familiar, we have good news for you: dental implants can fill the open spaces in your smile seamlessly, allowing you to speak in front of a crowd of people with complete confidence.
  • Renewed Self-Esteem – There is nothing like having a full set of teeth. However, many patients don’t realize that until they are missing one, a few, or an entire arch. Since dental implants can replace any number of missing teeth, they can address mild to severe tooth loss – in a way that looks and feels extremely natural, too!

Health Benefits

Dental implants in Haverhill also benefit your oral and overall health in the following ways:

  • Prevents Dental Drift – Dental drift is when the teeth surrounding the gap begin to move out of position. Although this may seem inconsequential, it can actually lead to several issues, including premature wear. Fortunately, dental implants can fill the open spaces, helping preserve the alignment of your bite in the process.
  • Easy Maintenance – While other tooth-replacement solutions require special cleaning products, dental implants do not! All you need to do is implement the same best practices you use to care for your natural teeth, like brushing twice a day, wearing a mouthguard during sports, and scheduling a dental visit twice a year.
  • Ability to Eat a Well-Balanced Diet – We mentioned above that dental implants can restore your bite force. That’s true! Not only does this allow you to eat a wider variety of foods, but it also ensures you can get the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients your body needs to keep your smile healthy.

Long-Term Benefits

Lastly, dental implants offer patients the following long-term benefits:

  • They Help Prevent Bone Loss – Unlike other tooth-replacement options, dental implants don’t rest against gums. Instead, they are inserted into the jawbone, ensuring it gets stimulated each time you chew.
  • They Can Last for 30+ Years – It’s true! With proper care, like flossing and rinsing with mouthwash consistently, your dental implants can last for several decades.
  • They Help Maintain a More Youthful Appearance – Tooth loss can lead to a sunken-in, hollow look. Dental implants can fill the gaps in your smile or give you an entirely new row of teeth, helping you maintain a more youthful appearance in the process.
