If you’re missing one or more permanent teeth and would like to replace them with beautiful, functional dental implants, you’re likely eager to get started. But although this dynamic treatment can restore your healthy smile for a lifetime, if you’re pregnant, here’s why your mouth makeover will have to wait just a little bit longer.
Dental Treatment and Pregnancy
Your pregnancy is divided into three trimesters based on the growth and development of your baby. In the first trimester, it is recommended that you avoid certain dental treatments unless they’re medically necessary, and not repairing the problem would pose a greater risk to you and your baby.
In the second trimester, however, it is safer to undergo certain treatments. Local anesthesia can be used for minor procedures, as well as X-rays if medically necessary. But because it is considered elective, dental implant surgery is not permitted during any part of pregnancy. In fact, in addition to the surgery itself not being allowed, the antibiotics prescribed after placement shouldn’t be used at any point during gestation, nor should the strong anesthesia required to keep you comfortable during the procedure itself. Finally, powerful hormonal fluctuations may also increase your risk of dental implant failure.
When to Begin the Dental Implant Process
While it’s true that you can’t undergo dental implant surgery when you’re pregnant, it doesn’t mean you can’t get the treatment process started while you wait. Your second trimester is a great time to have a consultation with your dentist!
When Will I Be Ready for Dental Implant Surgery?
When you’re ready to begin your dental implant treatment is ultimately up to you. After the second trimester or following the birth of your child, your dentist will be happy to meet with you and discuss the entire process, but don’t rush your recovery. Although it is important to have a healthy, beautiful smile, your physical and mental health is just as precious. Thus, take as much time as you need to bond with your baby and feel like yourself again. Then, when you’re ready to get started repairing your gorgeous grin, your dentist will be there to assist you.
